THE MAMMOGRAM CONTROVERSY - Mary Beth
Gibson, cofounder of Beyond Boobs Inc., the
support group for younger, premenopausal women
that advocates for early detection, was 41 when
she was diagnosed with breast cancer. "I'm not a
doctor. I don't have the clinical data, but I
have a lot of anecdotal evidence and
relationships with women who would not be alive
without mammography and self-exams," says
Gibson. "It's dangerous to tell women that
there's no value to self-exam. For women under
40, it's the only tool they have. It leaves a
whole lot of women unprotected." As to the over
treatment argument, Gibson agrees it will save a
lot of false positives but that the greater
danger is in letting women become complacent.
"It's confusing to women. 'I don't have to
worry,' that's the message they're going to
hear." She concludes by saying, "it's too
numbers-driven, and it doesn't present
alternatives." Gibson vows that Beyond Boobs
will continue to advocate for early detection,
teaching women to become familiar with their own
bodies."
Listen to our members and supporters:
"As I write this, four friends under fifty
are being treated for breast cancer. Wonder
where these gals would have been if they had
waited four or five years for their mammograms?"
Jacqui B.
"i can not comprehend the changing of these
recommendations. I haven't read one convincing
argument for the new guidelines. Did anyone else
read the articles and think this has got to be a
joke?
I can only determine that it boils down to
insurance companies saving money: 'About 35
million women undergo mammograms each year, at a
cost of more than $5 billion." Tracie H.
"I guess we are statistically INSIGNIFICANT."
Wendy O., A 42 year old featured in our 2009
calendar of young breast cancer survivors, who
was diagnosed at 39!
"I am writing today because I am a little
panicked and very angry about the Federal Breast
Testing Guidelines released this morning. I am
really hoping the Beyond Boobs women are
formulating a protest/response to this
outrageous attack on the progress to women's
breast health. Both of my grandmothers had
breast cancer diagnosed through a mammogram and
one was over 75 when diagnosed. She was treated
and lived an additional 12 years cancer free!
Under the new guidelines she would not have even
rec'd a mammogram!!
Even more upsetting are my dear friends here in
the Burg that are alive today as a result of
early detection and treatment through both
self-exams and mammography. By today's
guidelines they were to young for a mammogram
but not to young to DIE from breast cancer!"
Susan S.
Beyond Boobs will continue to promote our
message of taking charge of your breast health
and doing what it takes to ensure early
detection. We're living proof it works.
